Costs and Services
As we develop sources of income within our project period, we anticipate offering services that will require payment for use. While our goal is to make basic access to the Makerspace available to all visitors without cost, some services and offerings will require fees. Here's what you can expect:
!!! info "What kind of fees are we talking about?" - In the future, fees may be charged for specific areas, equipment, or offerings in the RUB Makerspace, typically on a per-unit-of-time basis. This billing structure is common in many makerspaces and fablabs. - While memberships and regular contributions are common funding instruments in autonomous makerspaces, this model is less common at universities. Nevertheless, we are considering memberships as a long-term option for the RUB Makerspace. - We are committed to ensuring that basic access to the Makerspace remains accessible without obstacles or costs. This includes access to general co-working areas. - For RUB-internal co-working, we aim to provide flexible options that do not require significant administrative effort. However, for budgetary reasons and fairness, we may need to apportion costs for these services in the future.
In addition to refinancing this cost-intensive project, pricing our services is also about ensuring fairness. By offering our infrastructure free of charge to certain companies, we risk contributing to a distortion of market competition, which is not our intention. We also recognize that other makerspaces and fablabs have their own users and do not wish to deprive them of potential visitors.
We are committed to finding the right balance between affordability, accessibility, and sustainability in our pricing model. We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to develop our services and offerings.
Sale and Procurement of Materials
The RUB Makerspace does not currently sell any materials. Consumables must always be brought along by the participants themselves.
!!! info "Material in the Makerspace" - Collection sites for collaborative material are provided under the hashtag 'treasure chest'. More information can be found at storage. - Consumables procured by the Makerspace itself are available exclusively for internal purposes or for the purposes of the respective source of funds (for example, project Worldfactory or MentorInn). - Unfortunately, collective procurements via the Makerspace with subsequent billing are not possible from an administrative point of view. - The persons responsible for the respective event are responsible for the procurement of materials within the scope of events (for example from teaching) in the Makerspace.
No Contract Manufacturing but Do It Yourself {: #selbermachen }
The Makerspace is a place for creative DIY, learning and experimenting. In contrast to "classic" workshops, we therefore do not offer contract manufacturing as a matter of principle.
This applies also to teachers, researchers and students. So we do not produce the architectural model or the special part for an experimental setup. Instead, however, you are very welcome to apply for a visit and/or for the next General Safety Instruction register with us and then start working on these things yourself in the next Open Makerspace!
??? question "Why We Don't Offer Contract Manufacturing" As a public infrastructure, the Makerspace is committed to ensuring that we do not compete with the free market or existing public facilities. There are many companies in the open market that offer prototyping and manufacturing using the same processes as the Makerspace. Additionally, there are existing workshops and laboratories within the university that are responsible for manufacturing jobs as part of research and teaching.
Due to our focus on shared learning through DIY, the Makerspace is not set up operationally or in terms of personnel to guarantee timely processing of manufacturing orders and related services. We believe that makerspaces, fab labs, and similar places are about learning through shared experiences, rather than focusing solely on contract manufacturing.
However, we may accept long-term commissions for certain processes or special projects on a case-by-case basis, subject to availability and capacity. If we are able to accommodate such requests, we will publish information about them on our website.
Coaching, Education and Training
Makerspaces are an ideal environment for offering workshops, training sessions, coaching, and other educational activities. We plan to offer both standard offerings of frequently requested content (such as 'Basics of 3D Printing') and customized educational projects in the long term.
Our aim is to implement tried-and-tested formats that have been successful with startups for product development, which can be adapted to the needs of our Makerspace visitors. By providing tailored education and training opportunities, we hope to foster innovation and support the growth of our community.
We appreciate your interest in our coaching, education, and training offerings. As we continue to develop our programming, we welcome feedback and suggestions on what topics and formats would be most beneficial to you.
Events in the Makerspace
The Makerspace is a great, unique place for events of all kinds. If you are interested in using a part of the Makerspace in this way, we will send you an individual offer. Inquiries are welcome directly via our form or by phone, see here.
Sharing Knowledge.
Actively sharing knowledge and learning from each other is actually the most important "currency" for the community. Therefore, regardless of any monetary issues, please try to be open to support other Makers and document your project for the public if possible.
